Summary:The tourism intense growth is managed by international organizations and national and local authorities as a panacea for the insufficient growth of other sectors. Faced with these positions that highlight the apparently positive aspects of tourism and its expansion, it is necessary to draw attention to various critical aspects of its operation and its effects at the global and local levels. In the first instance, this essay questions the official figures that point to a rapid growth in tourism. Also, various situations point to demonstrate that the quantitative growth of tourism and its concentration are factors that trigger various negative consequences. Among these, environmental are outstanding, as well as those that affect the living conditions of local populations, which is particularly sensitive in urban tourism that shows signs of rapid growth. Finally, the essay draws attention to the risks inherent to this growth mode and suggests that tourism faces several crossroads that must be faced in order to stay as a economic and social wealth indicator for the next decades. El intenso crecimiento del turismo es manejado por organismos internacionales y autoridades nacionales y locales, como una panacea para enfrentar el insuficiente crecimiento de otros sectores. Frente a estas posiciones que destacan los aspectos aparentemente positivos del turismo y su expansión, es necesario llamar la atención sobre diversos aspectos críticos del funcionamiento y de los efectos del mismo a nivel global y local. En primera instancia, este ensayo pone en duda las cifras oficiales que apuntan a un crecimiento rápido del turismo. Enseguida se plantean diversas situaciones que apuntan a demostrar que el crecimiento cuantitativo del turismo y la concentración económica y geográfica del mismo son factores que detonan diversas consecuencias negativas. Entre éstas destacan las ambientales, así como también las que afectan las condiciones de vida de las poblaciones locales, lo que es particularmente sensible en el turismo urbano que muestra signos de crecimiento rápido. Finalmente, el ensayo llama la atención sobre los riesgos inherentes a esa forma de crecer y plantea que el turismo está frente a varias encrucijadas que tienen que enfrentar para mantenerse como un indicador económico y de bienestar en las décadas próximas.
