Description
Summary:In the last two decades the debate about the future of the rural world has been influenced by a sociological current that proposes a rupture in relation to the dichotomous approach, that is, the approach that is based on the necessary field-city opposition, or between the Rural and urban, as if they were discontinuous and necessarily antagonistic socio-spatial realities. The idea of a new rurality points to the need to understand the new roles assigned to rural areas (leisure, entertainment, biodiversity reserve, etc.), without undermining the traditional role of producer of food, fiber and raw materials. Nevertheless, how this reality is captured by young people who annually enter in the faculties of agrarian sciences? The aim of the article is to find answers to this question, using the theory of social representations, with emphasis on the contribution of Moscovici and a research developed with 112 students of a traditional Brazilian university. The study was based on a variety of instruments, including interviews with the use of structured questionnaires (closed and open questions) and content analysis of narratives and words freely indicated by the students as a rural concept. The general conclusion points to the existence of three large sets of social representations of the rural. The first and most important is the one that associates the rural with the world of production and / or labor (the rural agricultural), while the second identifies it with an idealized world--idyllic rural. The third meaning is defined as the ecological-environmental rural, that is, the space of biodiversity and the objectives of preservation of natural life.
