Description
Summary:Introduction: The race has emerged as one of the most popular physical and sport activities, maybe because of the attempt to improve physical fitness, leisure practice, or even because of the thought related to health or esthetics. However, few investigations have been interested in studying the characteristics of the corridors. Thus, the purpose of this study was to assess the evidence and the runners of the marathon in Rio de Janeiro who completed the tests between the years of 2003 and 2009. Materials and Methods: There were listed the data from 10.566 runners who completed these marathons directly from the electronic site of the International Marathon of Rio de Janeiro. Results: From the total investigated, there is a significant number of male runners (n = 9,248; 87.50%), although there was a growth female participation, and of ages ranging between 40 and 44 years of age (n = 2,060; 19,50%). The average time that participants complete the proof is 4h:08min: 15sec, which represents an average speed of 10.41 km/h. Discussion: Our results show the growth of female participation and increased interest of people considered middle-aged in running long distance events. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
