Summary: | The use of sequential context & co-occurring gesture to construct meaningful communication in fluent aphasia is illustrated by applying conversation analysis to two excerpts of interactions between aphasic subjects (Ss) & (1) a speech language therapist at 1 week post-stroke, & (2) S's partner in a home setting at 12 weeks post-stroke. In (1), S mimes using a wheel chair while saying she can't do nothing in the discourse context of discussing friends in the hospital. In (2), S mimes peeling a potato at several points in a conversation on the merits of different kitchen knives, thereby compensating for his failure to retrieve the word peel. In both examples, Ss have used pragmatic knowledge to exploit contextual possibilities in an interactional adaptation consisting of the manipulation of sequential & gestural context. 8 References. J.
