Summary:The possibility of producing powerful carbon sorbents from scrap BelAZ and KamAZ truck tires is considered. This may prove a valuable means of tire recycling. Carbon materials with sorbent properties are obtained by carbonization of the initial tires and tires after ultrasonic treatment. The sorptional activity may be doubled by preliminary ultrasonic treatment of the tires in sodium hydroxide; the ash content is also reduced by almost a half. For KamAZ tires, the sorbents obtained perform as well as industrial active carbon; in particular, benzene sorption may reach 400 mg/g. For BelAZ tires, the resulting benzene sorption is 200 mg/g. Activation of the sorbents by means of carbon dioxide at 900°C produces sorptional activity exceeding that of regular industrial active carbon. For KamAZ tires, the benzene sorption may exceed 1000 mg/g, with iodine sorption of ∼1 g/g. For BelAZ tires, the corresponding figures are 700 mg/g and ∼0.9 g/g.
