Summary:During the 1985/86 growing season kiwifruit flowering dates and other phenological events have been monitored from Kerikeri in the north to Blenheim in the south. The phenological observations have been made at horticultural research orchards and by growers. The results show that budburst differed by as much as two weeks between districts. Budburst dates range from mid September to the beginning of October. Flowering dates show a similar spread from mid to late November. The number of days between budburst and flowering diminishes with increasing temperature. These relationships are quantified by a thermal time model. Examples are given of the prediction of flowering dates at Te Puke once budburst is known.
