Description
Summary:It has been erroneously assumed that Jan van Eyck was frequently indicated by the name of ,,Johannes". This led to some paintings having been attributed to this Master which are now looked upon as lost, e.g. a "Madonna with Duke Philip", and "la Belle Portugaloise", formerly in the possession of Margareta of Austria. These works of art, however, date from the beginning of the 16th. century. The "Madonna at the Well", by Van Eyck (Antwerp Museum), did not belong to the collection of Margareta, or else the signature is not genuine.
