Summary:Abstract This contribution describes various forms of in-betweenness lived by German-Jewish refugees in transit in colonial Kenya. It examines the multi-layered conditions of interaction between German-Jewish refugees and diasporic Indians as they were experienced by refugees and seeks to bring to the fore some of the complex dynamics within Kenya’s colonial hierarchies. Analysing refugees’ experiences as documented not only in personal letters and official correspondences, but also in autobiographical literary narratives, it puts refugee politics during the National Socialist regime in dialogue with global imperialism and (post)colonialism and shows how heavily immigration policies were impacted not only by race politics in multi-ethnic Kenya, but also by classism.1
