Summary:The volatile organic constituents from the leaf, stem and flower of Pogostemon plectranthoides Desf. were obtained by hydro-distillation and analysed using gas chromatography equipped with a flame ionisation detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Sixty-two, fifty-seven and forty-four compounds were identified from leaf oil (LO), stem oil (SO) and flower oil (FO). The identification was done according to their mass spectra, and their relative retention indices were determined on a non-polar stationary phase capillary column (ZB-5), representing 96.4% (LO), 94.9% (SO) and 95.2% (FO) of the total oil constituents. The major constituents were identified as (E)-β-ocimene (42.6-6.9%), germacrene D (21.1-5.9%), trans-β-guaiene (10.6-6.8%) and β-caryophyllene (9.6-6.3%) from various parts of the plant P. plectranthoides. The oil was found (E)-β-ocimene-germacrene D-trans-β-guaiene chemotypes from the plant growing in the Western Ghats of this region.
