Description
Summary:O'Neil and Komut discuss the illegal abortions in Turkey. Turkey's past pronatalist orientation represents the transformation of women's wombs into a politicized space and a general attempt by the state to control women's bodies. Through the prohibition of abortion and contraception, the state established a strict regulatory regime over women's reproductive capacity. The sheer number of women obtaining illegal abortions and dying from the complications is what motivated lawmakers to ease restrictions in the first place. By the time that legalization occurred in 1983, there had been more than 100 years of both extreme pronatalist and anti-abortion policy and discourse in circulation that without doubt would have impacted many women who sought to have illegal abortions.
