Description
Summary:Pre-breakdown currents were measured from polished nickel electrodes after various outgassing treatments at pressures of 10 −6 to 10 −9 torr. Breakdown was initiated by electron currents emitted from cathode sites characterized by work functions greater than 4 ev, electric field magnification factors of about 200 and emitting areas of 1 × 10 −12 to 1 × 10 −8 cm 2 . A breakdown mechanism is postulated which consists of the electron bombardment of the anode, the growth and 'blow-out ' of emitting sites and the transport of material from the anode to cathode.
