Summary:This paper examines some of the important trends in economics that influenced the liberalization of aviation markets from the late 1970s, the role that economics has played in the subsequent assessment of the implications of these reforms and more recent policy “tweaking”, and at the possible importance of more recent trends in economic thinking in influencing future policy developments.
