Summary:José de la Luz Sáenz, born in 1888 in South Texas, was one of eight children. Despite obstacles, he became a skilled teacher. In 1918, although Sáenz was 30 years of age, he volunteered for the army. Sáenz was well aware of the racism suffered by his raza(people). Despite this and his apparent bitterness, Sáenz believed it was his duty to serve, and kept a diary and a collection of letters telling of his war experiences and those of his fellow Mexican Americans.
