Summary:  In the language of probability, the set of all possible outcomes to flipping experiment, has been partitioned into disjoint events--they exhaust the sample space. An intuitive appealing fact is that when disjoint events exhaust the sample space, their probabilities sum up to 1, and that is the heart of (1). Here, Pfaff and Tran define a random phenomenon and disjoint events. They further show on how to calculate another series that probably converges to 1.
