Summary: | Payne discusses the poetry of Mao Tse-Tung. Mao seems to have sent his poems to the editor of Poetry with some misgivings. In an introductory note, he mentions that he received eight poems from the editor, who had no doubt acquired them from Mao's friends, and had delved in his memory and come up with ten more. He warned against any attempt to overvalue the poems and suggested that modern Chinese poetry should turn its back on the ancient style, which he had cultivated all his life. The mood of most of these poems is quietly meditative. |
