Summary: | Three anion-exchange resins, two strong base resins and one weak base resin, were used to compare the affinity of well-characterized hydrophobic and hydrophilic fractions of natural organic matter (NOM). The batch experiments were conducted with solutions of NOM fractions isolated from the Suwanee River, GA, and the South Platte River, CO. Analysis of the NOM fractions revealed that the higher the hydrophilic character of the NOM fraction, the lower the carbon/oxygen atomic ratio, the lower the UV-to-TOC ratio, the lower the aromatic C content, and the lower the molecular weight. The stronger the hydrophobic character of the NOM fraction, the higher its molecular weight, and less dissolved organic C was removed. The data suggested that anion exchange was the predominant retention mechanism of NOM, although adsorption could not be ruled out. At higher pH, the affinity of highly hydrophilic NOM was reduced. |
