description A flow-through system was developed to evaluate the effect of volatile and unstable substances on freshwater green algae using Chlamydomonas reinhardi as test organism. EC10 was measured over 4-10 d. Algae were constrained to the lower portion of the incubation vessel by a 1.2 um cellulose acetate membrane. Hollow fibre membranes removed gases and introduced carbon dioxide. Flow rate was 2 cell volumes per d; the pH was kept at 6-7 and cell density 50,000 per ml. EC50 values for the tested substances rose in the order atrazine, copper, cadmium, pentachlorophenol, 3,4-dichloroaniline, lindane, methyl parathion and 1,2-dichloropropane; the range for 10 d EC50 was 10.2-50,000 ug per litre. Sensitivity was greater in the flow-through system than in static tests. Test substance concentrations were consistent over the period of the test.
