In both novels, McLain describes her approach as "a blending of fact and fiction" "I have trusted my gut response to lead me to a particular life that inspires me, or, rather, completely obsesses me" she states. McLain sets the stage for her novel of love and war with a short prologue that establishes Gellhorn's background as an aspiring writer/journalist who anticipates and even welcomes the drama of war prior to meeting Hemingway in Sloppy Joe's Bar in Key West, Florida. The twisted mangrove and saw-grass marshes released a salty, earthy living smell, while roadside signs offered pan-ready turtles and bonefish, and ominous biblical quotes.
